Era yo un adolescente, cuando viendo retransmisiones de
carreras ciclistas y sobre todo, releyendo (y a veces estudiando, de tanto
leerlas) revistas especializadas de ciclismo me empezaron a llamar la atención
esas gafas deportivas que llevaban los ciclistas, especialmente los americanos,
que en esa época, principios de los 90, comenzaban, con Greg Lemond a la
cabeza, a hacer sombra a los hasta entonces dominadores europeos. Debajo vemos
a Grez Lemond con las Frame y a Phil Anderson con las Factory Pilot
En el pelotón
español, comenzaban a verse los primeros modelos de gafas de sol para ciclismo,
de la mano de marcas tan míticas con Bollé, que paseaban en su rostro, entre
otros el gran Miguel Indurain, Gianni Bugno o Tony Rominger. Fue con la
incursión a fondo en el ciclismo profesional de una marca americana como
Motorola, cuando comenzaron a proliferar en el pelotón esos modelos de gafas
que tanto admiraba y que tenían un no se qué, que las hacía distintas del
resto.
El salto definitivo fue con la irrupción en la élite de
Lance Armstrong cuando comenzaron a hacerse habituales los modelos M-Frame y Zero (arriba vemos a Sean
Yates, con el modelo M-Frame y a
George Hincapié con el Zero). En
1993, Lance Armstron se aupó al primer escalón del podium del Mundial de Oslo
con unas M-Frame por delante del
mismísimo Miguel Indurain, que hacía un mes había conquistado su tercer Tour de
Francia.
El año 1995 fue el del lanzamiento del modelo Eyejacket que tan famoso hizo
Richard Virenque o el propio Armstrong,
en su magnífica victoria en el Tour de ese año, homenajeando a su amigo
Casartelli, fallecido hacía unos días (abajo izquierda), o Laurent Brochard,
ganando en el Boulevard de San Sebastián el Mundial de 1997
Fue a finales de la década de los 90 cuando se renovó el
modelo M-Frame, siendo el modelo que aún perdura actualmente y que está a punto
de ser descatalogado. Era todo un clásico del pelotón, sobre todo de los
corredores sajones y poco a poco europeos. Todos recordamos la fantástica
victoria de Lance Armstrong en Alp D´Huez tras un ataque demoledor tras girar
la cabeza hacia Ulrich y Kivilev en el Tour del año 2001.
La explosión de popularidad de la marca californiana, a
nivel del mundo del ciclismo fue la introducción del modelo Radar. Rostros como los de Armstrong, Evans,
Schleck , Hushovd, Cavendish, Millar, Sastre, Valverde, Luis León, Cancellara
han sido testigo de la infinidad de combinaciones posibles de montura y lentes
del modelo Radar.
El último modelo para la práctica deportiva, especialmente
el ciclismo, de la marca del óvalo es el
modelo Jawbone, traducido al
castellano, algo así como “mandíbula de tiburón”, ya que la montura destaca por
su apertura inferior para un sencillo cambio de lente. Destaca igualmente, como
el modelo Radar, por la infinidad de combinaciones de colores de lente, montura
principal y el “jaw” o zona inferior abatible. Muy utilizada por ciclistas de
la talla de Hushovd , Cavendish o el propio Armstrong, que para aquel que no lo
sepa, tiene un contrato vitalicio con Oakley en compensación por el apoyo,
sobre todo económico que recibió durante su tratamiento contra el cáncer.
