A sus 42 años Ramón Arroyo es un ejemplo de superación. De valentía y de lucha contra sus propios miedos. Hace diez años le fue diagnosticada una esclerosis múltiple (EM) de tipo remitente recurrente: una enfermedad neurológica que impide que las señales que manda el cerebro lleguen al resto del cuerpo y que, en su caso particular, sufra brotes o ataques esporádicos. En octubre del año pasado completó un triatlón. Esta tarde relata en Donostia cómo hizo frente a la situación. La presentación de la sesión lo deja bien claro: ‘Rendirse no es una opción’.
El protagonista de esta historia pasó cuatro años de tormentos, de darle la espalda a los tratamientos, de no querer reconocer lo que tenía. Hasta que una noche de insomnio, al comprobar que no podía agarrar a su hijo recién nacido, decidió que había que salir del pozo antes de que éste se lo tragara. «O te quedas en casa y mueres, o sales», reconoce ahora Ramón. Su salida fue empezar a hacer deporte, primero con la bici estática en casa y luego probando a correr en la calle. «Un médico me dijo que no podría recorrer ni 200 metros así que fue lo primero que me propuse. Sufrí pero los acabé completando».
Fue superando barreras y distancias hasta que un día, buscando por Internet, se encontró una triatlón en Barcelona con una categoría para gente con EM (Challenge Barcelona Maresme). Se animó, se compró una bici, se sacó el carnet de la piscina y se lanzó literalmente a ella. Hace unos meses, después de 12 horas, 4 kilómetros nadando, 180 km en bici y una maratón, llegó a la meta.
Fue una prueba extremadamente complicada para él, pero también para su mujer y sus padres, que vivieron con angustia el desarrollo de la triatlón. A pesar de que los brotes llevaban tiempo sin aparecer, algunos síntomas permanecen instalados en su cuerpo. No puede sujetar bien el manillar de la bici con una de sus manos, y tiene que controlar la coordinación de sus piernas para andar, correr o pedalear. «Todo el mundo hace deporte sin pensar, yo no puedo. Tengo que acordarme de cada paso que debo hacer».
Ramón quiere compartir su experiencia. «Mi reto es informar y arropar a la gente con EM. El deporte no cura pero cuando estás sano y fuerte te recuperas mejor de los ataques», valora. «Tengo claro que nuestro peor enemigo somos nosotros mismos, los que nos ponemos la barrera. No podemos esperar a que alguien nos saque las castañas del fuego. No va a suceder».
«Mucha desinformación»
¿Pero conocemos la EM? «Hay mucha desinformación», reconoce. «Pensamos en sillas de ruedas, en gente muy deteriorada, pero el 60-70% de la gente con EM hace vida normalizada. La primera imagen siempre es la de Stephen Hawking pero él padece una esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA)».
Lo que tiene claro Ramón es que solo no se puede superar. «Conozco gente que no cuenta que tiene EM, ni siquiera a su mujer. Es algo psicológicamente muy duro de aceptar. Yo me planteé un objetivo, que no fue acabar la Ironman, sino el camino hasta llegar a ese día, lo bonito que es sentir tu felicidad y la de los de tu alrededor».
Igualmente reconoce que su historia ha servido para abrir los ojos a mucha gente con EM -«por desgracia hay algunos casos que no se pueden identificar conmigo»-, pero además ha sido un impulso y una motivación para los que practican el deporte en general. «La gente está harta de amarguras. Hay quien me dice, si tú puedes, por qué yo no. Y se ponen a trabajar».
De hecho, el protagonista de esta historia no termina su relación con las grandes pruebas en Barcelona. Su próximo objetivo era participar en el Ironman de Lanzarote que se celebra el 17 de mayo, pero hace un mes sufrió un percance con la bici en la que se rompió los ligamentos del hombro. «Me relajé con la mano buena y sufrí una caída tonta. Nada que ver con un brote. El último lo tuve hace tres meses».
Por eso su mente está puesta ahora en la Ironman de Vitoria (13-17). Allí coincidirá con más atletas con EM con los que ha compartido historias y experiencias, Diego Velázquez y Luisfer Serrano. «Ellos harán la prueba en su totalidad pero yo haré la media», admite.

The next time I read a blog, Hopefully it won’t fail me as much as this particular one. After all, I know it was my choice to read through, but I truly believed you would have something interesting to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of complaining about something that you could fix if you were not too busy looking for attention.
